SS-31 (elamipretide) is a small mitochondria-targeted tetrapeptide that concentrates at the inner mitochondrial membrane by binding cardiolipin. Research models have examined its role in stabilizing cristae structure, supporting electron transport chain efficiency, and reducing mitochondrial reactive oxygen species production under stress conditions. It has been studied in preclinical models of ischemia-reperfusion injury, age-related mitochondrial decline, and skeletal muscle bioenergetics.
